Tragic Avalanche in West Iran Claims Lives of 5 Mountain Climbers and Injures 4 Others
TEHRAN, Iran—An avalanche claimed the lives of five mountain climbers and injured four others from an all-Iranian climbing team in west Iran, as reported by state media on Saturday.
According to the state-owned IRNA news agency, rescue teams recovered the bodies of five climbers from San Boran peak, located around 300 kilometers (approximately 186 miles) southwest of Tehran. The other four injured climbers were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The report mentioned that the 9-member climbing team began their expedition on Thursday despite a warning from local authorities about potential risks. San Boran peak, the highest point of the Oshtrankooh mountain range at 4150 meters (about 13,600 feet), experienced heavy rain and snow in the past weeks.
Iran has seen fatal avalanches on occasion. In 2020, a series of avalanches resulted in the deaths of 12 people in a mountainous area north of Tehran.
