Tragic Building Collapse in Italy Claims Lives of Two Young Siblings and Their Mother
ROME—A tragic incident occurred in the southern Italian province of Naples on Sunday, resulting in the collapse of a two-story building. This unfortunate event led to the loss of two young siblings and their mother, while trapping the children’s grandmother under the debris, as reported by firefighters and local authorities.
Authorities mentioned on their official Telegram channel that a gas explosion was likely the cause behind the building’s collapse.
During the rescue operation in Saviano, rescuers first recovered the bodies of a 6-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl. A few hours later, they found the body of another victim, identified as the children’s mother. The search is ongoing to locate the older woman, identified as the children’s grandmother, believed to be trapped under the rubble.
Earlier in the day, the siblings’ 2-year-old brother was found alive with their father, who was hospitalized in Naples in critical condition.
Firefighters’ spokesman Luca Cari emphasized the need for caution and slow movement to prevent further collapses as they searched for the two missing women.
Mayor Vincenzo Simonelli was present at the site and described the building as “crumpled up on itself,” emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Media reports suggested that a gas leak might have triggered the explosion on the building’s second floor, causing it to collapse and cover the lower level with debris.
