Transitioning Landfills: Addressing the Dump Crisis

Sydney is facing a rapidly dwindling landfill capacity, posing a serious challenge for New South Wales (NSW) authorities. By 2030, there may be a need to transport some waste interstate, compelling households to begin separating their food scraps.

“We are no longer postponing action on this issue,” stated Environment Minister Penny Sharpe on Nov. 1. “This is a matter of urgency.”

While expanding existing landfills in Sydney may be considered, Sharpe advocates for a shift towards increased recycling and a reduction in landfill use.

“Landfills are outdated technology that produce significant emissions and result in the wastage of recyclable materials,” she emphasized. “It is imperative that we transition to more sustainable alternatives.”
