Transport Minister States Welsh Government Will Amend 20Mph Speed Limit Guidance
Ken Skates mentioned that in many areas, there were routes included in the 20mph speed limits that shouldn’t have been.
Wales’s new transport minister, Ken Skates, stated in an interview with North Wales Live that the government will be “correcting” its guidance regarding the implementation of 20mph speed limits in built-up areas.
He expressed his desire for speed limit decisions to be determined by local communities rather than being imposed by the government.
Mr. Skates acknowledged the concerns raised by many people, including half a million petition signatories, about the inappropriate inclusion of certain routes in the speed limit zones.
He admitted that adjustments need to be made to the guidance to address these issues.
“This will allow councils to reevaluate routes that are not suitable. The extent of the changes will depend largely on the preferences of the residents,” he explained.
Mr. Skates emphasized the importance of listening to communities and implementing changes based on their preferences.
The 20mph speed limit policy was introduced under former first minister Mark Drakeford with the aim of reducing accidents and injuries, but it has faced opposition from the Conservatives in the Senedd.
Mr. Skates will provide further details on the issue in a statement scheduled for Tuesday.
Rhun ap Iorwerth, leader of Plaid Cymru, urged the Welsh Government to review the impact of the new speed limits and work with local authorities to address any unreasonable restrictions.
