Treasury Department Announces US Sanctions Targeting Russian Hackers
The United States has implemented sanctions on two leaders of the Russian hacktivist group Cyber Army of Russia Reborn, according to the Treasury Department. The sanctions were imposed on Friday due to their involvement in targeting U.S. critical infrastructure.
Yuliya Vladimirovna Pankratova and Denis Olegovich Degtyarenko were identified as the leader and primary hacker of the group, known as CARR, in a statement released by Treasury.
CARR has carried out cyber attacks in Ukraine, as well as on countries and companies supporting Ukraine. The group began claiming responsibility for attacks on multiple critical infrastructure projects in the United States and Europe last year.
Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson stated, “CARR and its members’ actions to target our critical infrastructure pose an unacceptable threat to our citizens and communities, with potentially dangerous consequences.”
