Trudeau Announces He Will Not Seek Re-Election
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau states that he will not seek re-election in his Montreal riding in the upcoming general election.
This announcement comes shortly after Trudeau revealed his intention to step down as leader of the Liberal party once a new leader is chosen.
Trudeau won his first election in 2008 for the Montreal riding of Papineau, narrowly defeating the Bloc Québécois.
He led the Liberals to victory seven years later and has served as prime minister for over nine years now.
The Liberal party will select a new leader to take Trudeau’s place after a national leadership race scheduled for March 9.
It is anticipated that former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney will officially enter the race to succeed Trudeau on Thursday, with former finance minister Chrystia Freeland expected to join a few days later.
