Trudeau Announces Ottawa’s Plan to Appoint Commissioner to Supervise Treaties with Indigenous Peoples
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced plans to establish a new agent of Parliament to oversee the implementation of modern treaties. This new commissioner will ensure that the government is held accountable for agreements, regardless of who is in power in Ottawa. Trudeau shared this information with delegates on May 2 at a leaders’ forum for self-governing Indigenous governments in Gatineau, Quebec.
The government is in the process of concluding consultations on the role, with plans to introduce legislation after that and allocate $10.6 million over four years to support the commissioner’s work. Chief Robert Louie of Westbank First Nation also spoke at the morning event alongside Mr. Trudeau, emphasizing that this move is a crucial step in revitalizing Crown-Indigenous relations.
