Trudeau Claims He Is ‘Not Prioritizing Politics’ Following NDP Deal Disruption
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized his commitment to the priorities of Canadians despite the NDP’s decision to withdraw from the supply and confidence deal with his government.
During a press conference in Newfoundland on Sept. 4, Trudeau stated, “I am not focused on politics. I’ll let other parties focus on politics. I am focused on actually delivering the things that Canadians told me this summer they need.”
An hour before Trudeau’s address, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced the party’s decision to end the agreement that had been keeping the Liberals in power. In a social media post, Singh cited the Liberal Party’s alignment with corporate interests as the reason for the withdrawal.
The agreement between the Liberals and NDP, signed in March 2022, involved NDP’s support in confidence matters until June 2025 in exchange for Liberal support of NDP priorities like pharmacare and dental care.
When asked about the deal’s termination, Trudeau expressed that in his conversations with Canadians, housing affordability and grocery prices were of greater concern than political matters.
Regarding the impending election before October 2025, Trudeau highlighted that the Liberals would showcase a contrast to the federal Conservatives, accusing them of seeking to cut programs essential for Canadians during challenging times.
Singh’s decision to withdraw from the supply and confidence deal came less than a week after Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre urged him to end the agreement. Poilievre criticized Singh for not delivering on the promise to make Canadians’ lives more affordable.
