Trudeau Commends Modi’s Re-election and Discusses Importance of Rule of Law in India Relationship
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is congratulating his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on his re-election, while emphasizing the importance of the rule of law.
Mr. Modi secured a majority in the weeks-long election on June 4, however lost more seats than expected to opposition parties.
Despite significant trade between Canada and India, relations have been tense due to efforts by some Canadians to advocate for a separate Sikh homeland within India.
Tensions escalated last fall when Mr. Trudeau accused Mr. Modi’s government of involvement in the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar near Vancouver.
In a written statement, Mr. Trudeau states that Canada is willing to collaborate with India, but on the basis of human rights, diversity, and the rule of law.
Advocates for Sikh separatism in Canada still express distrust towards the Indian government.
