Trudeau Condemns Harris’ Presidential Defeat as Setback for Women’s Progress

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasizes that women’s rights and progress are being undermined, citing the recent defeat of U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris as a clear example.

Addressing an event hosted by the Equal Voice Foundation, a group dedicated to enhancing gender representation in Canadian politics, Trudeau stated that regressive forces are actively working against women’s advancement.

Trudeau, a proud feminist and unwavering ally, expressed his disappointment, saying, “It shouldn’t be this way. We were meant to be steadily progressing towards equality, despite the challenges.”

He noted, “However, not long ago, the United States missed the opportunity to elect its first female president for the second time. Women’s rights and progress are being attacked, both directly and indirectly, everywhere.”

Trudeau’s remarks were made just before his scheduled meeting with provincial and territorial premiers to address Canada’s stance on negotiations with the U.S., in light of the potential 25 percent tariff increase by incoming president Donald Trump.

These comments came shortly after Trump ridiculed Trudeau on social media, referring to him as the “Governor … of the Great State of Canada.”

Trump’s comment stemmed from a joke he made during a previous dinner with Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago estate, where the president-elect playfully suggested that Canada could become the 51st state of the U.S.
