Trudeau Confirms Continued Leadership After Intense Caucus Meeting
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that he will remain as leader despite the Oct. 28 deadline set by some Liberal MPs during a recent caucus meeting demanding his resignation.
When asked during a press conference on Oct. 24 if he would continue as leader, Trudeau simply replied, “Yes.”
He added, “As a party, we always engage in robust discussions on the way forward, and we will continue to do so with me as leader.”
During the previous day’s caucus meeting, twenty-four MPs handed Trudeau a letter urging him to step down with a deadline of Oct. 28 for his decision. Following the meeting, Trudeau told reporters that the Liberal Party remains strong and united.
Initial reports emerged on Oct. 12 of closed-door discussions among MPs urging Trudeau’s resignation. Liberal MP Sean Casey publicly called for Trudeau’s resignation on Oct. 15 after hearing from his constituents. In the following week, cabinet ministers supported Trudeau.
At the Oct. 24 press conference, Trudeau emphasized the need to prevent Pierre Poilievre from becoming prime minister and discussed leading the party forward.
Unlike the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party does not have a mechanism for MPs to remove a leader during a mandate.
In the polls, the Liberals have been behind the Conservatives for over a year, with the latest Nanos Research poll showing support for each party.
