Trudeau declares end to reign of terror with death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar
The passing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the Gaza Strip has been described as putting an end to a period of fear and violence by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Some world leaders believe his death could potentially lead to a resolution of the current conflict and usher in lasting peace in the Middle East.
Sinwar played a significant role in the attack on Israel last October, which resulted in an intense Israeli response and a widespread conflict involving multiple Middle Eastern countries.
The Israeli military announced that Sinwar was killed during a battle in Gaza and confirmed his identity through a DNA test. Israeli leaders viewed his demise as an opportunity for Hamas to surrender and release around 100 hostages still in their custody. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the conflict is not over yet.
Trudeau referred to Sinwar as a “cruel leader” of an organization deemed a terrorist group by Canada.
“Under Sinwar’s leadership, Hamas committed heinous acts on October 7, aimed to obliterate Israel, and carried out devastating terrorist attacks on civilians in the region,” Trudeau stated. “Today, some justice is served for the victims and their families.”
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly condemned Sinwar’s “legacy of terror” in unequivocal terms.
“Hamas must release the hostages immediately, disarm, and have no part in governing Gaza going forward. A ceasefire is imperative,” Trudeau added.
President Joe Biden hailed Sinwar’s demise as a positive development for Israel, the U.S., and the world, seeing it as an opportunity to free Israeli captives from Hamas and bring an end to the year-long conflict in Gaza.
Biden sees Sinwar’s death as a chance for a new chapter in Gaza without Hamas in power and hopes for a political resolution that benefits both Israelis and Palestinians.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted that Sinwar consistently rejected attempts by the U.S. and its allies to negotiate a peaceful resolution that would return hostages to their families and alleviate the suffering of Palestinians.
The U.S. plans to intensify its efforts to resolve the conflict, secure the release of hostages, and enable the people of Gaza to rebuild without the oppressive influence of Hamas.
