Trudeau Expresses Confusion Over NDP’s Retreat From Carbon Tax Support

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau questions the decision of the federal New Democrats to withdraw their support for the carbon price, despite acknowledging the challenges they are facing.

Historically, New Democrats have been advocates for this climate policy, even making it a focal point of their 2019 election campaign.

However, this week, the NDP has shifted its stance, stating that carbon pricing should not be the sole solution and urging provincial leaders to explore alternative ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Furthermore, the NDP has supported a non-binding Conservative motion that calls for Mr. Trudeau to engage in discussions with provincial and territorial leaders within the next five weeks to address the policy.

The Conservatives argue that the carbon price is increasing the cost of living for Canadians, while the Liberals assert that rebates offset these expenses for the majority of Canadians.

Mr. Trudeau speculates that NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is resonating with the Conservative message, but the Tories claim that Mr. Singh is attempting to distance himself from his past actions.
