Trudeau Meets with Officials and Evacuees in the Aftermath of Jasper Wildfire
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Hinton, Alta., to receive an update on the status of the Jasper wildfire.
Trudeau is scheduled to visit the mobile incident command center on Monday and meet with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland, and Jasper evacuees.
However, he will not be touring the town of Jasper itself.
Over 20,000 people were evacuated from the town and Jasper National Park almost two weeks ago as the wildfire approached, resulting in the destruction of one-third of the town’s buildings.
A Calgary firefighter tragically passed away over the weekend when a tree fell on him during fire-fighting efforts.
Trudeau expressed his heartbreak over the news and extended his thoughts to the man’s family, friends, and colleagues.
