Trudeau to Commemorate 80th Anniversary of D-Day by Travelling to Normandy
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is traveling to Normandy, France, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
On June 6, 1944, approximately 160,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches, marking the beginning of the end of the Second World War.
That day, 4,414 Allied troops lost their lives, including 381 Canadians.
Mr. Trudeau will participate in a Canadian ceremony at Juno Beach on June 6, followed by an international ceremony at nearby Omaha Beach.
The Canadian delegation includes 13 Second World War veterans, with the oldest veteran being 104 years old.
Marie-Eve Vaillancourt, the executive director of the Juno Beach Centre, mentioned that Canadian flags are displayed in the villages around the beach, showing the locals’ remembrance of the sacrifice made by the Canadian troops.
