Trudeau to Participate in Commemorative Events at Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will travel to Poland next week to participate in events marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
Trudeau’s office has confirmed that he will be departing on Sunday and returning on Tuesday, visiting the site of the largest camp run by the Nazi regime, where over one million individuals lost their lives during the Holocaust.
Accompanying Trudeau on this journey will be Canadian Holocaust survivors and Deborah Lyons, the federal envoy for Holocaust remembrance and combating antisemitism.
Additionally, Trudeau plans to meet with other Holocaust survivors and take part in a commemorative ceremony during his time in Poland.
While in Poland, the Prime Minister intends to hold discussions with the country’s president and prime minister to address matters of transatlantic security, support for Ukraine, and clean energy trade as part of Canada’s G7 presidency.
The leaders will also engage in talks related to nuclear power generation.
Furthermore, he will engage with undisclosed international partners on critical geopolitical issues, including Ukraine and the Middle East.
Earlier this month, the Polish government pledged to ensure that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could attend the commemorative events without the threat of arrest under an International Criminal Court warrant for alleged crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
