Trump Announces Discussions with Putin Regarding Economic Agreement Between US and Russia After Conflict in Ukraine
The U.S. president mentioned that the United States could potentially access Russia’s rare earth minerals in a deal similar to the current discussions with Ukraine.
On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Donald Trump revealed talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin about an economic development agreement between the U.S. and Russia, as well as ending the conflict.
Trump has been involved in advancing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine recently, aiming to enhance relations between Washington and Moscow overall.
The U.S. has been supporting Ukraine throughout the war by providing military aid and financial assistance to Kyiv while imposing new sanctions on Russia.
While focusing on resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump has also proposed new economic deals with both Kyiv and Moscow for the benefit of the United States.
“I am in serious discussions with President Vladimir Putin of Russia concerning the ending of the War, and also major Economic Development transactions which will take place between the United States and Russia. Talks are proceeding very well!” Trump posted on his Truth Social media account on Feb. 24.
During a press conference at the White House on Feb. 24, Trump mentioned that a partnership with Russia could result in the U.S. gaining access to rare earth minerals in the country.
The Trump administration is currently in talks with Ukraine for a separate agreement where the U.S. could access Ukraine’s rare earth minerals and other resources in exchange for support given to Ukraine.
Trump stated that his primary focus is on achieving a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
He also expressed interest in securing an economic deal with Russia similar to the one being negotiated with Ukraine.
During his remarks to reporters, Trump indicated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may visit the White House soon to sign the agreement covering Ukraine’s rare earth minerals and other resources.
He also mentioned plans to meet Putin in person in Russia in the near future, without specifying a date for the meeting.
Regarding ending the conflict, Trump suggested that a resolution could be achieved within a few weeks if approached intelligently.
“I think we could end it within weeks, if we’re smart,” he told reporters. “If we’re not smart, it‘ll keep going, and we’ll keep losing young, beautiful people that shouldn’t be dying, and we don’t want that.”
