TSMC’s Global Influence on Display as Morris Chang Attends APEC Summit
Supporting US policies, Mr. Chang expressed his views on the US restrictions on high-tech exports to China. He played a substantial role at the recent APEC summit held in San Francisco, interacting with various national leaders and representing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
Mr. Chang had informal dialogues with US leaders and other international figures, sharing insights on the semiconductor industry. Although he noted a significant amount of interaction with US leaders, Mr. Chang reported no interactions with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during the event.
Under Mr. Chang’s leadership, TSMC has evolved into the world’s top chip enterprise. His expertise in semiconductors drew curiosity and respect, leading to discussions on the fundamentals of chip technology with international leaders.
Highlighting Taiwan’s global stature and fostering international friendships, Mr. Chang’s significant impact at the summit has been noted. He expressed support for US restrictions on high-tech exports to China, aligning TSMC with the measures.
Mr. Chang’s extensive experience in the United States has laid the foundation for TSMC’s success, contributing to its pivotal position in the global arena. Under his leadership, the company’s chips constitute about 50 percent of global production, with its advanced chips dominating 90 percent of the market.
China’s goal to independently produce advanced chips under the “Made in China 2025” policy faces substantial challenges, and the Chinese semiconductor industry continues to face complexities despite significant investments.
The semiconductor industry serves as a focal point in the US-China rivalry, with the US government implementing upgraded chip bans on China, further exacerbating the challenges for the country. As a result, China’s dependence on foreign chips underscores the competitive nature of the global semiconductor industry.
