UK Minister Urges Crucial Opportunity to End Ukraine War as G7 Convenes in Munich
UK Cabinet Minister: The UK is actively working to seize the “crucial opportunity” of negotiations to end the Ukraine war as global leaders convene for a major security summit in Munich.
Technology Secretary Peter Kyle also commended President Donald Trump for his dedication to ending the conflict after Trump announced plans to collaborate with Russian President Vladimir Putin on resolving the issue.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned that Putin is not preparing for negotiations but to continue deceiving the world, stressing the need for unified pressure from allies on Moscow.
G7 ministers are set to convene at the Munich Security Conference on Friday.
Kyle refrained from drawing comparisons but emphasized the importance of acting calmly and supportively towards President Zelenskyy’s needs.
“It is a crucial opportunity that Britain must seize, ensuring our voice is heard and our interests are represented in the best possible manner,” said Kyle.
The UK and other European allies have emphasized that Ukraine must play a central role in peace talks.
While the US suggests that Kyiv may need to compromise on territory and that NATO membership for Ukraine may not be viable, NATO and the UK government maintain that Ukraine’s path to alliance membership is “irreversible.”
Foreign Secretary David Lammy will engage with allies at the summit in Germany, focusing on Ukraine’s future as discussions lead the agenda.
Trump’s conversations with Putin and Zelenskyy underscore his commitment to ensuring Kyiv has a seat at the table in discussions.
Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy appeals to Western allies to stand firm against Russia, highlighting the urgent need to hold Russia accountable for its actions.
As meetings continue with various international representatives, questions persist about the concessions Russia may need to make in any potential deal.
Defence Secretary John Healey and others are expected to engage in discussions on Ukraine and European security, focusing on the importance of unified action against Russian aggression.
