Unions Report Federal Immigration Department to Eliminate Over 3,300 Jobs

Two federal public service unions have announced that the Immigration Department is planning to eliminate 3,300 jobs.

In a joint statement, the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Canada Employment and Immigration Union have expressed concerns that the department has not disclosed which employees will be impacted by these cuts.

More details are expected to be revealed in mid-February, but the unions have highlighted that the discussion about these cuts occurred in a union-management meeting before notifying the staff.

The unions emphasize the importance of department staff in processing citizenship and permanent residency applications, issuing passports, and conducting interviews.

Both unions are urging the government to reduce outside contracting instead of reducing the workforce.

Public service employees have been anticipating layoffs ever since the government initiated efforts to reallocate federal spending in 2023.
