University Dean Warns AI Tools are Tempting Learners to Skip the Basics
Paul Darwen believes that artificial intelligence (AI) can be a great tool, but warns that there is a temptation for those who have not learned the basics to rely too heavily on it instead of learning. As an AI researcher, Darwen cautions that AI could potentially overshadow fundamental learning opportunities for younger individuals if society becomes overly dependent on the technology.
Darwen, who serves as the associate dean of IT at James Cook University’s Brisbane campus, draws parallels between the rise of AI and past inventions like calculators and spreadsheets. These inventions alleviated people from mundane tasks, allowing them to concentrate on more creative pursuits. He likens AI to having a less proficient assistant who speeds up certain tasks.
While acknowledging the benefits of AI, particularly in areas like programming, Darwen emphasizes the importance of learning the basics first. He points out that AI products can assist in coding, but individuals must understand the foundational principles to engage with more sophisticated concepts effectively.
Concerned about the potential impact of generative AI, Darwen underscores the necessity for society to maintain certain manual tasks rather than fully relying on technological solutions.
