University of Toronto Seeks Court Order to Remove Encampment Despite Protesters Refusing to Leave
The University of Toronto is seeking court approval for police intervention to remove protesters who are refusing to leave a pro-Palestinian encampment established on campus earlier this month.
The university has filed a motion in court to put an end to the demonstration, citing irreparable harm to the institution caused by the encampment.
Among other requests, the university is requesting authorization for police to “arrest and remove individuals, objects, and structures” that disobey a court order.
Additionally, they are seeking to prevent protesters from obstructing access to university property or erecting fences, tents, or other structures on campus.
The protesters have stated that they will defend themselves with their legal team and are refusing to vacate the area, defying a deadline set in a trespass notice issued last week.
Similar encampments at university campuses have emerged across Canada in recent months, prompting several schools to consider or take legal action against the demonstrators.
