US Tariffs on Canadian Oil Could Begin on Feb. 18, Other Goods on Feb. 1

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 10 percent tariff on Canadian oil, while the White House has confirmed that 25 percent levies on imports from Canada will proceed on Saturday.

During the signing of unrelated executive actions in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump was asked about including Canadian crude oil in the duties.

The president stated that Canada, Mexico, or China cannot prevent the tariffs from being enforced.

Although Trump did not provide specifics on his tariff proposal, he reiterated concerns about trade deficits and once again linked the duties to the influx of fentanyl into the United States.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared that Canada is prepared to deliver a “purposeful, forceful but reasonable immediate” response to the tariffs.

The federal government has prepared multiple retaliatory tariff options to deploy based on Trump’s final decision.
