US Warns Iran of ‘Severe Consequences’ for Direct Military Attack on Israel

The defense secretary emphasized that the U.S. is well-equipped to safeguard American personnel and allies from threats from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist organizations.

The United States is prepared to defend American personnel and support its partners in the event of a direct military attack by Iran against Israel, as stated by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Austin reaffirmed that the United States has enhanced force readiness and substantial military capability in the region.

In discussions with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant, Austin warned of severe repercussions should Iran choose to launch a direct missile attack against Israel, a key ally of the United States.

“I made it clear that the United States is well-prepared to defend U.S. personnel, allies, and partners in the face of threats from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist organizations and is determined to prevent any actor from exploiting tensions or expanding the conflict in the region,” Austin wrote in a statement on X.
The defense secretary on Sunday ordered the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its attached destroyers to remain in the region amid escalating tensions.
President Joe Biden recently convened the national security team to address Iranian plans for a potential missile attack on Israel and the preparedness of the United States to defend Israel and protect American personnel.

Tuesday’s Attack

“It was a significant attack,” Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder stated in response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel on Tuesday.

Ryder reported that nearly 200 missiles were launched into Israel, with two U.S. Navy destroyers firing interceptors at missiles believed to originate from Iran. No confirmation was available regarding the interception of these missiles at the time.

No U.S. personnel were harmed during the attack.

The missile attack on Tuesday heightened tensions between Israel and Iran-backed groups Hezbollah and Hamas.

“Hezbollah is upset that the IDF exposed their plans to massacre Israelis, so they decided to target innocent civilians by firing a barrage of rockets,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a post on X.
The IDF also shared what it claims to be raw footage of Iranian missiles over Jerusalem, a significant site for Muslims, Christians, and Jews, denoting the Iranian regime’s broad target.
Israeli Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the current IDF spokesman, stated that the country’s air defense system successfully intercepted the threats, although the defense remains vulnerable.

Following the missile barrage, the Iranian Mission to the United Nations affirmed that Tehran has executed its response and cautioned against further Israeli actions.

“Should the Zionist regime dare to respond or commit further acts of malevolence, a subsequent and crushing response will ensue,” it stated on X.

What’s Next

The United States is in ongoing consultation with Israel regarding the next steps in defense, as per the Pentagon.

The Pentagon press secretary underscored that a diplomatic resolution is crucial for lasting peace and stability, emphasizing the avoidance of broader conflicts in the region.
