Victoria Police Warn of 600% Increase in Water Accidents During Holiday Season

Victoria Police reported a significant rise in water incidents, with over 100 occurring in the first week of 2025 compared to just 17 in 2024.

The police are urging jetskiers to adhere to safety rules and improve their behavior following a surge in accidents on the water.

Among the incidents, many involved reckless jetski behaviors like speeding, proximity to swimmers, and collisions with other vessels.

One incident involved three teenagers being thrown into the water when their jetski nosedived into a wave and broke its hull, fortunately without injuries.

Water Police Inspector James Dalton emphasized the seriousness of the situation, warning against the reckless actions of jetskiers.

Multiple serious collisions have already occurred on the water, prompting concerns about safety.

Authorities also raised concerns about the high number of rescues, with 145 incidents on Jan. 4 alone.

Efforts are underway to increase patrols and enhance safety measures in popular water recreation areas to address the growing number of incidents.
