Victorian Parliament to Introduce a Slew of Rental Reforms
The Victorian government is introducing new legislation to address issues with rental properties and rent increases.
On Nov. 27, Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Consumer Affairs Gabrielle Williams announced plans to introduce the Consumer and Planning Legislation Amendment (Housing Statement Reform) Bill in the Victorian Parliament.
The legislation aims to tackle excessive rent hikes and substandard rental properties.
The rent review process will be improved to consider factors like the size of rent increases and property maintenance issues.
Additionally, rental properties must meet minimum standards from the day they are available for rent, with fines for individuals or agents who fail to comply.
Other reforms in the bill include protections for tenants, mandatory training for real estate agents, and penalties for breaking the law.
The Victorian government plans to implement more changes in 2025 to further enhance rental fairness and protect tenants.
New South Wales has also passed similar rental reforms, but concerns have been raised about the potential impact on landlords and tenants.
Despite some opposition, the Victorian government believes these reforms are necessary to address the rental crisis and ensure fair treatment for renters.
