Visas of Multiple Foreign Criminals Revoked
Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has taken action against seven foreigners by cancelling their visas in an effort to resolve a deportation crisis. Despite facing mounting pressure and calls for his dismissal, Mr. Giles is now contemplating deporting approximately 30 individuals who were granted permission to stay in Australia based on a directive he himself approved.
Directive 99 outlines Australia’s approach to non-citizens, indicating a higher level of tolerance based on their length of stay in the country. Mr. Giles revealed that he has revoked seven visas in recent days to address the situation left in disarray and repair the migration system.
Amidst the chaos, Mr. Giles faces scrutiny for his handling of the matter and the need to rebuild a system that has been left in ruins. He emphasized the importance of restoring order and rebuilding public trust through transparent decision-making that prioritizes community protection and common sense.
He pledged to release a new ministerial directive for public review promptly, emphasizing the need for decisions to be guided by the protection of the community and sound judgment. Mr. Giles also highlighted the significance of considering the impact on victims and their families, as well as ensuring that family violence considerations align with government expectations and community standards.
Previously, Home Affairs Secretary Stephanie Foster acknowledged a breach of protocol within the department for neglecting to inform Mr. Giles about legal decisions allowing certain foreign criminals, like the New Zealand man CHCY, to remain in Australia despite their offenses.
