Voice Actress Nobuyo Oyama, Known for Bringing the Beloved Japanese Cartoon Robotic Cat Doraemon to Life, Passes Away at 90

TOKYO—Nobuyo Oyama, best known as the raspy voice of Doraemon, the beloved cartoon robotic cat from the future, has passed away. She was 90.

Oyama, who voiced Doraemon for more than a quarter century, passed away from natural causes on Sept. 29, her agency, Actors Seven, announced on Friday.

Oyama lent her voice to the blue-and-white robotic cat from 1979 to 2005.

Created by the cartoonist Fujiko F. Fujio in 1970, Doraemon and the tale of his friendship with Nobita, a kind-hearted but somewhat lazy boy, gained immense popularity. The manga and anime series have been enjoyed by millions of fans in Japan and around the world, translated into numerous languages.

In the series, Doraemon emerges from the 22nd century and aids Nobita in challenging situations using futuristic gadgets like an “anywhere door” and “take-copter.”

Born in Tokyo in 1933, Oyama pursued acting and made her debut in a 1956 drama on Japan’s NHK public television. Her first voice acting role was in 1957 in the dubbed version of the TV drama series “Lassie.”

Oyama’s distinctive voice made her a favorite in anime and children’s programs. She also voiced one of three piglets in a popular children’s puppet show in the early 1960s and portrayed teenage boy Katsuo in the family anime series “Sazaesan” before “Doraemon.”

Oyama retired as Doraemon in March 2005 as part of a cast refresh for the main characters. “I hope Doraemon will continue to be a beloved character in the distant future,” Oyama expressed.

In 2015, Oyama’s husband revealed she had been diagnosed with dementia. Despite this, as the head of a school of sound arts, Oyama was known to nail her Doraemon voice on the first attempt when called upon.

Oyama’s funeral was held privately by her family, as per her agency.

Noriko Ohara, the voice of Nobita, passed away in July.
