Watchdog Reports Spike in Council Officials’ Salaries Surpassing £100,000
Many councils are struggling to maintain essential services and balance their budgets, making the news of six-figure payouts to town hall officials particularly concerning.
The Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA) has disclosed that the number of town hall bosses receiving over £100,000 in payments is the highest it has been in almost ten years.
According to the Town Hall Rich List 2024 published by TPA, more than 3,100 council leaders received these generous payouts in 2022-2023, with 829 officials receiving over £150,000.
These salaries and payouts mark a record high since 2015 and come at a time when many UK councils are facing financial challenges.
To alleviate financial strain, some councils have resorted to council tax increases, reduced care services, and asset sales.
Birmingham, Slough, Thurrock, and Liverpool were among the councils that implemented significant council tax hikes in the past year.
John O’Connell, the chief executive of TPA, emphasized the need for accountability in council spending amidst rising taxes and executive pay.
