Western Australia Allocates Over Half a Billion Dollars for Energy Transition
The development of common user network infrastructure in the North West Interconnected System is set to receive $147.6 million in funding.
Western Australia (WA) has dedicated $502 million (US$331 million) to accelerate the state’s objectives of a cleaner, more affordable, and reliable energy future.
Premier Roger Cook stated that this funding will facilitate the attraction of major clean industries to various strategic industrial areas statewide, including Latitude 32 in Kwinana, Karratha, the Peel region, the Goldfields, and South West.
The allocated funds also include a $324 million investment for the planning and procurement of long-lead transmission infrastructure for the state’s primary electricity network. This initiative is expected to stimulate industry growth, renewable energy projects that generate jobs, and the use of renewable energy.
Additionally, the funding will support Western Power in assessing and developing potential Clean Energy Link transmission projects to meet renewable generation demand within the state’s most populated area.
Furthermore, Western Power will commence planning and scoping essential network enhancement options for the northern, central, and eastern corridors of the South West Interconnected System.
The Cook government is also directing $147.6 million towards supporting the development of common user network infrastructure in the North West Interconnected System in the Pilbara region, creating new avenues for clean energy opportunities.

“The energy transition is the biggest economic transformation in decades, and my government is grasping the opportunity with both hands,” Mr. Cook said.
Additional new investments include funding for standalone power system deployment, the reconstruction of the Blackstone remote community’s power station, and the acquisition of existing power station assets in specific communities.
Australia’s Economic Powerhouse
Total energy transition investments in WA’s 2024-25 state budget exceed $5.4 billion.
Energy Minister Reece Whitby affirmed a commitment to establishing WA as a renewable energy powerhouse, stating that this investment will facilitate the necessary investigation, consultation, and planning to capitalize on the global energy transition’s benefits and economic prospects.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted WA’s crucial role as an economic powerhouse within the nation and emphasized the state’s abundance of resources essential for achieving net zero goals.
Mr. Albanese underscored the significance of producing more solar panels, batteries, and clean energy technologies through increased exploration and extraction of minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, critical minerals, and rare earths to meet global demand.
Earlier announcements indicated a $36.4 million investment by the state government to streamline approvals and reduce green tape, aligning with the ambitious reform agenda aimed at accelerating job-creating projects, particularly in green energy sectors.
However, the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) expressed concerns about WA’s shift towards unreliable and expensive renewables, cautioning against replicating the mistakes seen in states like Victoria, and emphasizing the importance of valuing and promoting the resources sector for continued prosperity.
