Western Australia Surrenders 38,000 Guns to the Government
Gun owners in Western Australia were offered up to $1,000 in cash for returning their firearms before the implementation of new, stringent gun laws.
Under the Labor government’s $64.3 million buyback program, 38,000 guns have been surrendered by Western Australians.
Individuals received up to $1,000 for each firearm relinquished in anticipation of the upcoming strict gun regulations in March 2025.
Gun ownership in Western Australia and throughout the country is subject to strict regulations, requiring valid reasons such as hunting, shooting, or primary production.
During the six-month buyback scheme, more than 20,500 license holders returned their weapons.
Premier Emphasizes a Safer State
Western Australian Premier Roger Cook highlighted that reduced access to guns, combined with stricter regulations and monitoring, will create a safer environment for all residents.
“My government has enacted the toughest gun laws in the nation, fulfilling our commitment to enhancing public safety by removing unnecessary firearms from the community,” he expressed.
