What caused Nova Scotia’s PC Premier to call for an early election?
News Analysis
Governing parties may call early elections for various reasons, such as seeking a stronger mandate, securing voter assurance before a major change, or sensing that popular support has peaked. For Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative (PC) Premier Tim Houston, it appears that the latter reason is most prominent.
“He’s probably decided that now is a good time to go to the polls,” shared Donald Savoie, the Canada Research Chair in governance at the University of Moncton, with The Epoch Times. He noted that a major factor influencing this decision is the current performance of the federal Liberal and Conservative parties.
The governing Progressive Conservatives recently lost power in neighboring New Brunswick to Susan Holt’s Liberal party. Despite this outcome, Savoie mentioned that opposition to the Trudeau Liberals was a common theme during door-to-door visits by candidates from both the provincial Liberals and PCs.
