What Do the Parties Promise Regarding China in the Elections?
Labour’s manifesto was released on Thursday, joining other national political parties in sharing their plans for the country. This includes their stance on China, viewed as one of the top hostile states to liberal democracies due to its status as the second largest economy.
The Conservative Party, in power for the past 14 years, has a well-documented history with China. They oversaw a period of strong Sino-British relations known as the “golden era,” which has since deteriorated rapidly. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced in 2022 that the golden era was over, and that the UK would approach the Chinese regime with “robust pragmatism.”
