Winnipeg Man Confesses to Murders of Four Women, Claims Not Criminally Responsible
A man has confessed in court to the killings of four women in Winnipeg, with his defense arguing for a finding of not criminally responsible due to mental illness.
Court of King’s Bench Chief Justice Glenn Joyal announced on May 6 that the focus of Jeremy Skibicki’s trial will be on his mental capacity and intent.
The Crown and defense agreed to a judge-alone trial instead of a jury trial due to the complexities of this defense strategy.
“Conducting this trial before a jury presents certain challenges,” said prosecutor Christian Vanderhooft.
The trial is scheduled to commence on May 8.
Mr. Skibicki, aged 37, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder.
