Woman Who Filed Lawsuit Against Chinese Mental Hospital for Abuse and Illegal Detention Goes Missing

A young woman went missing in Jiangxi, China while pursuing legal action against a psychiatric hospital that reportedly detained and mistreated sane individuals.

The missing woman, Li Yixue, also accused the psychiatric hospital of human rights violations in partnership with the police.

Li gained public attention through live-streaming videos on social media exposing human rights abuses at Jiangxi Mental Hospital against people without mental illnesses.

She intended to challenge the Chinese Communist Party’s judicial and medical systems through her legal actions and garnered significant support from the Chinese public.

Li’s actions stemmed from her personal encounters with the police and Jiangxi Mental Hospital.

In March 2022, Li visited the Dinggong Road Police Station in Nanchang but was turned away when she tried to report a civil dispute. Subsequently, the police sent her to Jiangxi Mental Hospital against her will for 56 days.

Upon her release, Li filed a lawsuit against the hospital for illegal compulsory hospitalization.

During the legal proceedings in December 2022, no definitive decision was made, prompting Li to continue her advocacy efforts on social media platforms.

Prior to her second lawsuit in May, numerous Chinese citizens expressed support for Li on social media and at the court, although authorities prohibited public attendance.

Following a one-day hearing, Li disappeared without any subsequent communication.

Concerned netizens left messages on Li’s social media accounts, expressing apprehension for her safety and solidarity.

Despite efforts to contact the Qingshan Lake District Court, there was no success in obtaining information related to Li’s legal case.

Revelations of Abuse in Chinese Psychiatric Facilities

Li disclosed in her videos that Jiangxi Mental Hospital improperly held many individuals without mental illness, preventing their families from retrieving them.

In one video, she highlighted the abusive treatment by hospital staff, including restraining individuals to beds, denying restroom access resulting in soiling, and other forms of mistreatment.

Li realized the severity of the situation after witnessing others without mental disorders detained at the hospital for various reasons, leading her to describe the facility as the CCP’s “private prison.”

Amid threats from the police regarding her legal actions, Li continued to expose the collaborative effort between authorities and mental health institutions to persecute Chinese citizens.

Abuse for Persecution

Recent incidents have unveiled the Chinese Communist Party’s use of psychiatric hospitals to detain and mistreat regular citizens as a means of persecution.

Several individuals, including human rights defenders and outspoken critics, have been forcibly held and subjected to inhumane practices in mental health facilities across China.

Li’s disappearance underlines the coercive tactics employed by Chinese officials to suppress dissent and restrict personal freedoms.

The report by Civil Rights and Livelihood Watch confirmed the continued abuse in China’s mental health system to silence dissidents and maintain political stability through unlawful detentions.

Li’s case echoes similar instances of abuse where forced hospitalizations were used to suppress individuals critical of the regime.

International human rights organizations have documented cases of Falun Gong practitioners enduring persecution in psychiatric hospitals, further underscoring the systemic human rights violations prevalent in China.
