Women’s Group Writes Letter Advocating Against Greens’ Abortion Bill
A women’s group is concerned that a proposed bill in New South Wales (NSW) regarding abortion access could potentially force hospitals to provide terminations against their conscience. The Abortion Law Reform Amendment (Health Care Access) Bill 2025, introduced by Greens MP Amanda Cohn, aims to expand abortion services in the state and ensure their accessibility. The bill also includes provisions for health practitioners, such as nurses and midwives, to perform abortions up to 22 weeks’ gestation.
Opposition to the bill has arisen from various groups, including women’s advocacy organizations, religious entities, and members of the Liberal Party. Demonstrations have taken place outside NSW Parliament, with concerns raised about the potential impact on medical freedom. Women’s Forum Australia has criticized the bill for potentially endangering women, particularly those in rural areas, by allowing underqualified practitioners to perform medical abortions without adequate medical care.
There are also worries about the bill’s effect on religious medical facilities, like Catholic hospitals, which may face pressure to comply despite objections to abortion services. Protests against the bill have been led by Liberal MP Susan Carter and anti-abortion campaigner Dr. Joanna Howe, who have vowed to continue opposing it.
‘No One Will Be Forced,’ Says Greens MP
Despite concerns, MP Amanda Cohn has emphasized that the bill does not intend to compel all hospitals or health professionals to provide abortions. She has assured that individual doctors, nurses, and midwives will still be able to exercise conscientious objections. The referral requirement in the bill aligns with similar laws in Victoria, where objecting doctors must ensure patients receive access to abortion providers.
With an election approaching, opponents of the bill are determined to make it a key issue, particularly in Labor-held marginal seats. The outcome of the bill and its implications for abortion access in NSW remain a topic of fierce debate and contention.
