Worldwide IT Crisis: Banking Institutions, Airports, and Government Agencies Rendered Inoperative
Major institutions worldwide are grappling with a significant IT outage that has disrupted operations in banks, airports, supermarkets, and government services.
This massive IT outage has impacted major institutions nationally and globally, affecting banks, media outlets, airports, supermarkets, and government services.
While reports indicate that the outage was not malicious, there is uncertainty about its duration, leading some businesses to close temporarily.
Telstra has stated that a problem with Microsoft and a software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike is responsible for affecting its services.
The federal government spokesperson revealed that they are closely collaborating with the National Cyber Security Coordinator to address the unfolding outage that started around 3:30 p.m.
They clarified that the outage stems from a technical issue with a third-party software platform utilized by the affected companies, emphasizing that it is not a cyber security incident.
The National Emergency Mechanism group will imminently convene, co-chaired by the National Emergency Management Agency.
Downdetector has reported outages affecting Telstra, Microsoft, Google, Foxtel, National Australia Bank, ABC, Uber, ANZ, and Bendigo Bank.
Moreover, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, as well as various police departments and government entities, experienced disruptions, along with point-of-sale systems at Coles and Woolworths.
Microsoft acknowledges the issues and is actively working to address them for its apps and services.
