DeSantis Responds to Scott’s Remarks on Florida Standards
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has fired back at his rival, Republican Senator Tim Scott, after Scott criticized DeSantis’ education reforms. Scott had called out DeSantis for Florida’s new standards on African American history, specifically highlighting a benchmark clarification that mentioned how slaves developed skills for personal benefit. Scott argued that slavery was about separating families and inflicting devastation, and hoped that anyone running for president would appreciate this. However, DeSantis accused Scott of accepting false narratives and lies from the left, and defended his state against false accusations. DeSantis’ campaign has accused the media of nitpicking the standards, pointing out that a previously rejected Advanced Placement course on African American studies had the same required content. Florida is one of 12 states that require the teaching of African American history. DeSantis and Scott have been vying for the same donors, with Scott hoping to gain traction as DeSantis’ poll numbers decline.
