Senator Rubio Calls for Non-Extradition of Peace Envoy to Colombia
Florida Senator Marco Rubio is urging the Biden administration to reject Colombia’s request for the extradition of former warlord Salvatore Mancuso. Mancuso, who completed a 12-year cocaine trafficking sentence in 2020, was named a peace envoy by Colombian President Gustavo Petro to promote the disarmament of other illegal armed groups. Rubio argues that Mancuso should not be allowed to avoid additional prison time for human rights abuses and should be held accountable for his crimes. Mancuso is currently seeking asylum in the United States, claiming that he could be killed if returned to Colombia.
