Trump Must Balance Trials and Reelection Bid, Says US Judge Tanya Chutkan
Former President Donald Trump will have to manage a pending criminal trial while also campaigning for his potential 2024 reelection, according to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan. She is expected to set a trial date for the case, which charges Trump with attempting to overturn the 2020 election. Special Counsel Jack Smith has proposed a trial start date of January 2, 2024, while Trump’s lawyers have requested a delay until April 2026. Chutkan, however, stated that neither of those dates would be acceptable and that Trump would have to make the trial date work regardless of his schedule. Trump has previously portrayed all four of his criminal prosecutions as politically motivated attempts to undermine his potential return to power.
