Adams reverses decision on upscale migrant housing in Harlem

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has decided to repurpose a luxury condominium in Harlem to house migrants, causing outrage in the community, according to the New York Post.

The 35-unit building, originally planned as a luxury condominium with amenities such as an indoor swimming pool and marble bathrooms, was forced to shut down due to the developer’s foreclosure. It was then repurposed as a homeless shelter, leading to backlash from the community, which questioned why the building wasn’t being used for affordable housing instead.

Responding to the criticism, Mayor Adams announced that the building will not be used to house migrants and asylum seekers. Instead, it will serve as transitional housing for long-term New York City families experiencing homelessness.

Despite the decision, residents voiced their outrage during a meeting with the mayor, expressing frustration over the lack of affordable housing in the area.

As of now, no set deadline has been reported for a move toward affordable community housing.
