Sources: Biden and Trump Scheduled to Visit Texas Border on Thursday
Both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are scheduled to visit the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas on Thursday, following the collapse of congressional talks on managing illegal migration, sources familiar with the plans revealed.
These visits highlight the significant role immigration will play in the upcoming 2024 presidential race.
Biden is set to visit Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, a region with high levels of border crossings, where he will meet with border agents to discuss the importance of bipartisan legislation. This will be his second visit to the border as president, with his first being to El Paso last January.
Meanwhile, Trump will travel to Eagle Pass, Texas, approximately 325 miles away from Brownsville, another contentious area in the ongoing state-federal dispute over border security.
The breakdown of the border deal in Congress has prompted the Department of Homeland Security to reassess its priorities, potentially leading to changes in funding for border agents and other authorities. Biden is considering executive actions, such as invoking Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, to address the influx of migrants into the U.S.
