Zoo worker’s keys cause ostrich’s death | US News
A beloved ostrich has passed away after ingesting a zoo worker’s keys.
The staff at Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center in the US expressed their sorrow at the loss of the five-year-old bird named Karen.
According to the zoo, Karen grabbed and swallowed the staff member’s keys by reaching over a fence.
Despite consulting experts across the country and attempting both surgical and non-surgical procedures, the zoo was unable to save the ostrich.
Karen was euthanized on Thursday, peacefully passing away in the hands of the staff, as stated by Fawn Moser, the zoo’s interim director.
An investigation into the incident was carried out by the Kansas zoo, with appropriate actions being taken concerning the team member involved.

“The loss of Karen has left us devastated,” expressed Ms. Moser.
“She wasn’t just an animal; she was a cherished member of our community. Our hearts go out to our dedicated animal care team, who developed strong connections with Karen during her time with us.”
Having arrived at the zoo in March 2023, Karen was affectionately known for her enthusiasm for playing in water and being the ‘dancing queen’ of the zoo.
