Parents of Columbia protesters held responsible for college riots: Correspondence

The Concern: Piers Morgan’s article urging accountability from student protesters’ parents.

While reading Piers Morgan’s inquiry about the protesting students at Columbia (“Where the hell are their parents?!” May 1), I couldn’t help but laugh.

The parents of these protesting students either don’t care or are in support of their actions. Morgan also questions the whereabouts of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who seems to be preoccupied with pursuing former President Donald Trump at the direction of President Biden’s administration.

Instead of focusing on the students, Morgan suggests directing attention towards Columbia’s President Minouche Shafik and her colleagues who are allowing this disgraceful display to continue unchecked.

But not to fret, as the warm weather will soon arrive, and the protesting group will likely disband as they seek summer vacation.

Piers Morgan raises the question of “Where are the parents?” However, I believe a more pertinent query is “Who are these students?”
I demand that the ratio of students to non-students apprehended be made public, not just in New York but nationwide.

Was it relevant to ask “Where are the parents?” during the 1968 Columbia protests? No, it wasn’t.

Additionally, Morgan misunderstands the term “intifada.” While it does mean “uprising” in Arabic, these protests are against the genocide of the Palestinian people, not against Jews.

Regarding his question on why Jewish individuals protest against Israel, it is because they oppose genocide, as exemplified by Dartmouth College’s head of Jewish studies who was arrested and expelled from Dartmouth for advocating for her pro-Palestinian students.

I believe that the families of students involved in damaging school property should be held accountable for covering the repair costs. If the families have to bear the financial burden, it may lead to a swift end to their involvement.

The Concern: President Biden’s address denouncing student protests promoting civil disorder.

President Biden’s response seems to be driven purely by political motives (“Slow Joe: we must have order,” May 3).

There has been a delay and hesitancy in his condemnation of antisemitism and the ongoing criminal riots at universities across the nation in recent weeks. Biden and his team appear to be testing how radical-left Democrats will react to any denunciation of the anti-Zionist rhetoric and actions happening.

This hesitancy also explains why he has not fully condemned the students and external instigators causing chaos on college campuses. President Biden seems to prioritize politics over principles.

Despite the rampant antisemitism on campuses, President Biden chose to deliver another speech.

Given that this antisemitism on campuses violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964, why hasn’t he instructed the Justice Department to act against these US-flag-burning antisemites and their supporters, similar to his response to the Jan. 6 riots? He could have also deployed the US Marshals, following in the footsteps of then-President Dwight Eisenhower’s actions in Little Rock in 1954.
