Officials in Ukraine acknowledge Russian advances as Kharkiv offensive gains strength
The defense ministry of Russia has asserted that their troops have secured an additional 10 positions in the northeastern region of Kharkiv in Ukraine. Russian forces have advanced further into the Kharkiv area this past week, aiming to weaken Ukrainian forces stationed there, as stated by Oleh Syniehubov, the governor of the region. Syniehubov mentioned that the enemy is deploying small groups in new directions to stretch out the front line deliberately. The focus of Russian forces has now shifted towards Vovchansk, a town in Kharkiv situated just 3 miles away from the Russian border, according to Syniehubov. He described the battlefield conditions as challenging. The Kyiv-appointed military administration in Vovchansk has reported that Russian forces are establishing positions on the outskirts of the town.
Over the weekend, the defense ministry of Russia announced the capture of nine villages in eastern Kharkiv. On May 14, Moscow declared the takeover of the tenth village, Bugrovatka, located west of Vovchansk, after several days of combat. The ministry reported that units of Russia’s Battlegroup North freed the settlement of Bugrovatka and infiltrated the enemy’s defense lines. The accuracy of these claims by Russia could not be independently verified by The Epoch Times.
After the initial invasion by Moscow in early 2022, Russian forces had gained control of significant portions of eastern Kharkiv, including Kupiansk, the regional capital. However, they withdrew a few months later, leaving Ukrainian forces in charge of the region except for minor areas east of the Oskil River. While Russia labeled this retreat as a “strategic withdrawal,” Kyiv and its Western allies saw it as a humiliating Russian defeat. In the following 18 months, Russian forces have primarily concentrated on the eastern front, making gradual but strategically crucial advances.
Recently, Russian forces re-entered Kharkiv, initiating a new front in northeastern Ukraine. John Kirby, the U.S. National Security Council spokesman, confirmed this renewed offensive in Kharkiv on May 10. The fear is that this development could lead to Ukrainian troops being drawn away from the eastern front, where they face superior Russian numbers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the dispatch of reinforcements to the Kharkiv frontline areas, including Vovchansk, recognizing the enemy’s tactics to divert their forces. The prolonged border between Kharkiv and Russia’s western Belgorod region is of strategic importance.
Ukrainian forces have been engaging in frequent artillery attacks on civilian sites in Belgorod from Kharkiv, sparking strong warnings from Moscow. A recent incident involving a Ukrainian artillery shell hitting a building in Belgorod resulted in casualties, intensifying the need for Russian forces to advance swiftly into Kharkiv. The city continues to face regular airstrikes and artillery barrages from Russia.
During a visit to Kyiv, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured continued support, emphasizing the impact of U.S.-supplied weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine. Zelenskyy requested additional Patriot missile systems for the Kharkiv region due to the ongoing attacks by Russian forces. Following Blinken’s visit, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief claimed a stabilization in the situation in Kharkiv, although the active phase of Russia’s offensive is still in progress. Kirylo Budanov acknowledged the current blockage of enemy progress to some extent but acknowledged that the offensive is ongoing.
