Biden and Trump Easily Secure Victories in Kentucky and Oregon Primaries

President Joe Biden and his Republican rival, Donald Trump, both gained more delegates on Tuesday as they won primaries in Kentucky and Oregon, solidifying their positions as the presumptive nominees.

These victories, while mostly symbolic, give a glimpse into where the Democrat and Republican bases stand as the presidential nominating season comes to a close.

Despite securing their nominations, both Biden and Trump are still facing opposition within their own parties. Biden is dealing with protest votes over his handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict, while Trump is seeing support for former rival Nikki Haley.

In Kentucky, around 18% of Democrat votes went to “uncommitted,” while Haley was winning about 6% in the GOP race with 80% of the votes counted.

With only eight presidential nominating contests remaining, the focus now shifts to upcoming primaries in Idaho, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota.

Additionally, voters in Kentucky, Oregon, Georgia, and Idaho also participated in state primaries to choose nominees for the U.S. House and other local contests.

In Georgia, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, leading the prosecution of Trump in a 2020 election interference case, won the Democratic primary against challenger Christian Wise Smith. The judge in the case, Scott McAfee, was also re-elected.

In Multnomah County, Oregon, the progressive district attorney is facing a tough challenge from a candidate promising to be strict on crime.
