Matt Whitaker Warns Newsmax: Merchan’s ‘Leisurely Path’ Could Result in Failure

Former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker expressed his concerns to Newsmax on Wednesday regarding the slow progress of former President Donald Trump’s New York paperwork trial. Whitaker suggested that the judge’s deliberate pace in the trial could potentially work in favor of Trump by generating increased support for the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

Whitaker criticized Judge Juan Merchan, stating that he seems to have a bias against Trump and is intentionally attempting to disadvantage him. The former acting AG emphasized the unusual trial schedule, which includes frequent breaks on Wednesdays and Fridays, highlighting that it deviates from the typical process of a trial.

According to Whitaker, the extended trial timeline was initially intended to keep negative publicity around Trump but has inadvertently given him more opportunities to communicate with the public, thereby boosting his popularity. Whitaker also expressed concerns about a potential impact on the jury due to the seven-day break in the case, citing the risk of jurors discussing the case outside the courtroom.

Looking ahead to next week, Whitaker mentioned that the trial will conclude after the Memorial Day holiday, with jurors deciding on Trump’s charges of falsifying business records. The closing arguments and jury deliberations are expected to take place following the holiday break.
