General Election in UK Set for July 4th
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed his request to King Charles for the dissolution of Parliament, setting the stage for a showdown with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.
On July 4, the country will head to the polls with Mr. Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer vying for the position of Prime Minister. Speculation had been mounting throughout the day, leading up to a Cabinet meeting at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
Outside Number 10, Downing Street at 5:15 p.m., Mr. Sunak addressed the media, emphasizing his commitment to restoring economic stability through his policies. He revealed that he had conversed with King Charles on May 30 to dissolve Parliament, marking the official start of the election campaign.
Mr. Sunak boldly stated, “On 5 July, either Keir Starmer or I will become prime minister,” criticizing the Labour leader for lacking conviction and a clear plan amidst the current global uncertainties.
Following last month’s local election setback and poll ratings showing a significant gap behind Labour, the Conservatives faced challenges with defections and resignations. Despite potential delays, Mr. Sunak decided to call the election following a dip in inflation figures.
As the unelected Prime Minister since October 2022, succeeding Liz Truss, Mr. Sunak navigated through a tense political landscape. The dissolution of Parliament signifies the beginning of a pre-election period with a flurry of activity as parties scramble to nominate candidates by June 7.
