Hillary Clinton: Democrats Were Too ‘Complacent’ on Abortion

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledges that Democrats were in denial for years about the potential reversal of abortion rights established by the Roe v. Wade decision, stating that more could have been done to fight against it.

In an interview with The New York Times earlier this year, Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump, emphasized the need for a more serious approach to the threat against abortion rights.

Clinton expressed regret that most Democrats and Americans failed to realize the critical nature of the struggle for the country’s future.

She criticized Democrats for overlooking the possibility of the Supreme Court reversing abortion rights, leading to the recent Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision. Clinton commended the anti-abortion movement’s persistence in chipping away at Roe v. Wade, highlighting the lack of a similar effort from the Democratic side.

Additionally, Clinton accused Senate Democrats of being too passive in preventing the appointment of conservative justices under Trump’s administration.

Despite raising concerns about anti-abortion efforts during her 2016 presidential campaign, Clinton faced dismissal from voters and polling indicated that most did not believe abortion rights were at risk.

Looking ahead to the current presidential election, Clinton warned of an existential threat, cautioning against potential erosion of democratic processes and women’s rights if the wrong decision is made.

She also highlighted the global trend of restricting women’s rights, citing examples from China, Iran, and Russia, where women are marginalized by political and religious authoritarian regimes.

Clinton attributed her 2016 loss to sexism, highlighting the scrutiny and expectations faced by women in political leadership.

She emphasized the need for people to remain vigilant against efforts to silence dissent and urged action to prevent the erosion of democratic values and women’s rights.
