Trump narrowly escapes assassination attempt, Letters

The Issue: An assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally.

Thankfully, former President Donald Trump is recuperating from the assassination attempt (“Trump survives sniper’s bullet,” July 14).

Although I may disagree with his policies, as an American I will defend and believe in his right to express his opinion. The list of successful and unsuccessful attempts on our politicians’ lives is getting longer, sadly.

Now should be a time of reflection on how our society has evolved. Political violence only begets more violence, further radicalizing our society. Now is the time to unite behind candidates and understand that in four years we get to elect another leader if we see fit.

It is a sad commentary on where we are as a nation that the attempted assassination of Trump was not surprising. However, for the past eight years the escalatory rhetoric directed at former President Trump has been disturbingly incessant.

The vitriolic discourse has been so inflammatory that Trump has even been compared to Hitler.
The mainstream media has unceasingly lashed out at Trump. President Biden recently stated he wanted to put Trump in a “bullseye.” People who are prone to merciless acts of violence are fueled by such talk.

Now would be a good time for the commander-in-chief to try and heal a wounded nation.
Donald Trump had the presence of mind after his assassination attempt to ask the American people to continue to fight.

That includes President Biden fighting for all Americans.

I do not know if the Lord Almighty spoke to Biden about staying in the race. However, it seems God spoke to Trump and protected him so he could keep on running.

Let’s get one thing straight: Trump’s escape wasn’t a miracle. Trump is alive today because of dumb luck, and the poor aim of his would-be assassin.

This act of violence may very well be Trump’s ticket to the White House come January 2025.

The issue: A misleading report in The Post’s breaking coverage of the Trump shooting.

At 7:39 p.m. on July 13, The Post website cited unnamed sources that inaccurately claimed the shooter of former President Donald Trump was “a Chinese man”.

To our knowledge, no other news media made this claim. In this current era of heightened anti-Asian hate, Chinese Americans and the Asian American community are already looking over their shoulders on a daily basis.

On behalf of Committee of 100, one of the nation’s leading non-profit organizations of Chinese Americans established in 1989, I write to express our outrage.

Violence and hatred against the AAPI population continues to be a problem in our country.

By irresponsibly reporting false information your reporters have caused the Chinese American community additional harm.
